RESULT AND DISCUSSION - ESTIMATION OF ATPase FROM MYELIN:

SDS-PAGE OF PROTEIN IN MYELIN:

The total protein present in stress induced and normal rats were studied by subjecting it in to polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by CBB staining. The band pattern shown in plate 1 shows appreciable changes in the fore, mid, hind brain region of stress induced rats when compared to the control group of rats. High density bands were encountered in FB, MB and HB while the stress induction resulted in low intense bands.

 ESTIMATION OF ATPase FROM MYELIN:

Table 3 depict the activity of ATPases (Na-K+.Mg2+, Ca2+) in rat brain myelin were measured. The activity of ATPase were found to be decreased in the stress group rats than the control rats (p<0.05).In contrast, Group II showed significant increased activities of all (p<0.05). ATPases.
ATPases are highly sensitive to ischemic stress. The most prominent disturbences in energy metabolism are exposed as depletion of adenosine triphosphate (ATP); the consequence in inhibition of all ATP-dependent enzymes (Stojanovic; 1988). Dopamine and Serotonin known to excite/inhibit synaptosomal Na-K+TPase in the absence /presence of Ca2+ (Glebov et al., 1997).
Na-K+TPase is crucial for maintaining ionic gradients in neurons and is reported to be eritically involved in potassium buffering after periods of hyper stimulation when our physiology esxcited to hyper state.
The pathophysiology of some psychiatric disorders is believed to be associated with perturbation of ion homostasis, and earlier studies have shown that activity is decreased in patients with depression and other psychiatric disorders (Wood et al., 1991).
